Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey announced that the team has signed free agent guard/forward Trevor Ariza to a multi-year contract.

“Trevor is a young, athletic wing player who will thrive in Rick Adelman’s system,” said Morey. “Each year in the league Trevor has improved. What he has accomplished at a young age is already impressive and we expect his improvement to continue.”

Ariza (6-8, 210, UCLA) holds career averages of 6.9 points (.470, 808-1718 FG), 3.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.14 steals in 311 games (52 starts) with the New York Knicks, Orlando Magic and L.A. Lakers. In 2008-09, Ariza emerged as a key contributor for the Lakers during the team’s title run. He appeared in a career-high 82 games (20 starts), averaging 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.67 steals in 24.4 minutes per game. Ariza scored in double figures 39 times, including a career-high 26 points (9-13 FG) vs. Dallas (3/15/09). The five-year NBA veteran also made his presence felt on the defensive side of the ball by ranking ninth in the NBA in steals per game. Overall last season, Ariza led the Lakers in steals 30 times and in blocks on seven occasions. He set his career high with five steals vs. Utah (1/2/09) and matched that total vs. Phoenix (2/26/09). Ariza added to his game in 2008-09 by becoming a perimeter threat for the Lakers, making a career-high 61 3-pointers (.319, 61-191 3FG). He also registered a double-double with 11 points and a season-high 11 rebounds vs. Sacramento (11/23/08). Ariza started all 23 postseason games for the Lakers during the 2009 NBA Playoffs, averaging 11.3 points (.497, 92-185 FG), 4.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.57 steals. He also led the Lakers with 40 3-point field goals made (.476, 40-84 3FG) and ranked among the league postseason leaders in steals per game (13th overall).

Houston Rockets guard Tracy McGrady will switch jersey numbers next season to help raise awareness for his Darfur humanitarian project, the National Basketball Association team said on Monday.

McGrady, will surrender his No. 1 jersey to new teammate Trevor Ariza, a swingman. McGrady hopes to raise attention for the "3 Points" documentary film that will debut in America later this year, a movie chronicling his 2007 journey to Darfur refugee camps in Chad.

The "3 Points" refer to the goals of peace, protection and punishment in Darfur, with McGrady seeking peace and protection for those forced into camps and punishment for those involved in the Darfur violence.

Kobe Bryant "24" Yellow Lakers Jersey

Best player in the league? That's for NBA nation to argue, but there's no debate that, when it comes to NBA merchandise, Kobe Bryant has the most popular player jersey.

Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers' 11-time All-Star, regained the top spot on the NBA's list, bumping 2008 No. 1 Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics to second.

Bryant had the most popular jersey in 2007. The Lakers are a Western Conference-best 35-9 this season.

The league's rankings are based on sales at the NBA Store in New York City and NBAStore.com since the start of the 2008-09 season through January 2009.

Two seasons ago, Bryant changed from No. 8 to No. 24. The switch probably had a lot to do with his moving up from fourth to first in jersey sales.

Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James has re-gained second place in NBA jersey popularity.

James trails only Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers. Rankings of the top 15 players jerseys and top 10 teams' merchandise sales were released today. The list is based on sales at the NBA Store in New York and sales at NBAStore.com since the start of the 2008-09 season through this month.

James last finished as high as second in the 2005-06 sales season. Bryant regains the No. 1 spot he held prior to last year, when Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics ranked first. James' close friend, Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets, has moved to third place, and Garnett has slipped to fourth.

The Lakers' team merchandise is first for the sixth time in the last seven years, surpassing the Celtics, who took over the top spot last season as they marched to the NBA championship.

The Celtics now place second, while the New York Knicks, Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls rank third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

James could still top Bryant in a "best-of-three," with James winning the MVP award Bryant earned last season, and with James and the Cavaliers topping Bryant's Lakers in the NBA finals.
